Writers' & Artists' Guidelines
Manuscripts
We accept queries and unsolicited manuscripts, not only for Spectrum magazine, but also for Spectrum online.
We prefer that all queries and manuscripts be sent by e-mail to editor@spectrummagazine.org as attachments (Word document). However, we will also accept manuscripts on PC disk and hard copies.
Writers are encouraged to read recent issues of Spectrum magazine and Spectrum online for typical length, style, and topics. In addition, writers of articles or reviews for Spectrum online are requested to limit themselves to 1,000 words, at most.
Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style, fourteenth edition.
Send a short author bio that includes e-mail address, current position, educational background, and geographical location or institution that you want associated with you. Your e-mail address will be published unless otherwise specified.
Artists
We welcome professional, amateur, and student artists. We feature original art work on our covers and art features within the magazine. Please query first.
Cover Art Work
Cover art work is typically created for us following a specific color scheme and theme. We work with artists in developing ideas that express the look we envision for that particular cover. We typically ask for preliminary sketches before finalizing a cover concept.
All art work must follow the following fixed specifications:
6 x 9 inches (vertical)
Original art work or digital scans at 355 dpi (color-corrected) provided by artist.
Stars incorporated into art work.
Artist statement & artist bio to accompany artwork.
Art Features
Art features within the magazine are printed in black and white. Therefore, art work must either be created in black and white or, if created in color, retain visual interest in black and white. From time to time, we publish color art features, but typically all art work features are printed in black and white. We accept original art work to be scanned or digital scans at 355 dpi provided by artist.
Prospective artists should contact Bonnie Dwyer, editor, for details on upcoming covers and topics.
